Who we are

GDS Advisory team plays a central role in getting GDS Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) expertise out across government to support digital delivery and transformation. We run dozens of missions with government organisations every quarter, drawing together temporary delivery teams or offering expert advice. We help improve capability in digital delivery by proactively identifying gaps and supporting government organisations to fulfil these needs.

We are currently building our delivery management team to deliver assignments across government, and this role will be crucial in supporting, growing and quality assuring the work delivered by that team.

What you’ll do

As a Digital Delivery Advisor in the GDS Advisory team, you will get the opportunity to work in a range of short and medium-term placements across different departments across the Government’s Digital Data and Technology function. For instance, in some departments you may be asked to play an advisory role, helping map out their digital delivery requirements for a particular service or project. In other departments, you may have a more hands-on role, adding to the department’s delivery capacity through managing a delivery team to support a particular time-limited piece of work where there is an immediate need or resource gap. You’ll be pragmatic and have a range of DDAT experience.

The common thread through all these placements are that they will involve you in the

delivery of complex products and services; you’ll be core to making decisions that build high performing teams, adept at breaking down barriers for your team or teams and both planning at a higher level and getting into the detail to make things happen when needed. Working with suppliers, the role requires some experience of commercial, supplier and dependency management; this includes ensuring commercial contracts and suppliers are held to account for their timeliness, value and quality.

As a Digital Delivery Advisor you’ll:

  • manage complex products and services that are being discovered, defined and delivered by multiple teams, which have high technical and/or political risk
  • lead, and continually improve, the development, release and provision of service of digital products, using proficiency in scaled lean/agile management methods and techniques
  • manage and communicate between complex stakeholder groups, using influence and awareness to balance key priorities, appropriately communicating and advocating both direction and change
  • drive delivery momentum, solve issues and unblock problems - setting sustainable pace whilst ensuring teams are working towards delivery commitments. At times this means being comfortable with uncertainty, accountability and being the escalation point for internal and external issues
  • lead, create, coach and align teams, implementing the most effective programme and team structures for delivery and team health
  • work in multi-disciplinary teams, collaborating across all disciplines, using a thorough understanding of the variety of disciplines involved in digital delivery, including engineering, service design, product management, performance analysis and user research
  • contributing authoritative expertise to, or leading, agile sessions or conferences inside and outside government
  • challenging and improving disproportionate organisational processes where these impact the pace of a team. Influencing and make positive changes to the organisation

We’re looking for people with strong interpersonal skills who enjoy working in a demanding, high profile agile environment. We’re looking for people who are passionate about agile working, who care about technology and who know how to make projects succeed. And we want people who believe that how you work is as important as what you deliver.

We’re interested in people who:

  • understand agile and lean methodologies and how they help deliver products and services at scale

  • are confident matrix-managing multi-disciplinary teams
  • can promote agile practices across an organisation
