What you’ll be responsible for in this role? 

  • Work as part of a central engineering team, providing support to multi-disciplinary engineering Squads or Tribes to develop and implement products by applying knowledge of design principles, procedures and practices.
  • Help transpose our architectural vision into a detailed ‘how’, addressing key technology delivery questions and the practicalities involved, enabling development teams to pick up deliverable work that is ready
  • Coordinate with Engineering Managers and Heads of functions to align technology and development practices across Squads and Tribes.
  • Apply extensive knowledge of design principles & patterns, procedures and practices
  • Lead review including where appropriate architecture, design, coding, quality and security
  • Lead investigations / spikes on complex technical problems, develop proof of concept technical solutions, and run technical discoveries to address how we deliver new ideas
  • Contributes to the relevant scrum events; sprint planning / user story estimation, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews / demos and retrospectives
  • Develop and manage technical documentation to agreed standards
  • Take ownership to overcome technical problems and live incidents
  • Produce low-level design outputs to enable other engineers to effectively develop software 
  • Investigate and develop prototypes and proof of concepts using new technical developments relevant to component area of expertise
  • Coach the team to follow excellent coding practices, including through pair programming, and quality standards and provide training and mentoring to senior engineers.
  • Ensure test driven development (TDD), and behaviour driven development (BDD), principles are followed wherever possible 
  • Represent Covea externally (e.g. meetups, recruitment etc) from a technology perspective, as needed

What would we like to see in you? 

  • Previous experience in a Senior / Lead Technology role
  • Significant experience in Cloud technologies including Spinnaker, Octopus, CI/CD Automation and Continuous Deployment
  • Significant experience translating an architectural vision into a detailed ‘how’ for a product or service to be built by development teams, ideally which you have subsequently overseen / supported / delivered 
  • Experience developing micro services architecture applications on scalable cloud infrastructure such as AWS/Azure
  • Leadership skills with demonstrable experience in mentoring engineers, and leading technical solutions delivery within agile development teams
  • Experience developing code for highly available business critical software hosted in public cloud
  • Understanding of software architecture of large corporate applications
  • Demonstrable skills around secure coding standards and practices
  • Knowledge and experience of developing coding standards and measuring these through the implementation of static code analysis and non-functional testing techniques.
  • Demonstrable experience of agile working practices, Continuous Integration and GIT Flow
