Job description

As the Head of Content Design, you will:

  • Provide leadership and vision for the Content Design profession in the DfE
  • Work across Government departments to make sure there’s a cohesive approach to content design as well as to contribute to the design services that cut across departments
  • Build and grow a forward-thinking and diverse team of hardworking content designers
  • Build content designers capability across the department through hands on coaching, building career paths and identifying development opportunities
  • Support people to grow in the profession, by providing education, training and coaching and mentoring
  • Raise the profile of design within the department, persuading people at all levels of the value of being user-centred and the importance of design in policy and service delivery
  • Raise awareness and visibility of work, mentor and coach individuals and service teams
  • Create accessible knowledge, standards and practice to set good conditions for other content designers to work effectively
  • Create opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing across government to promote the best approach to content design
  • Work with senior leaders in the department to develop their ability to support agile content designer development
  • Provide leadership by example, contributing to discussions about content within services and websites, implementing solutions, working closely with product and delivery managers, designers, user researchers and operational colleagues
  • Lead and manage the content design strategy, clarifying and communicating the department's content goals, activities and outcomes to colleagues and teams
  • Be a leader in the DfE who supports others to develop and contributes to building a culture of collaboration, inclusivity and excellence.

Team

The Department for Education is transforming how government makes policy, products and services for young people, adult learners and the social care system.

You will be working across the DfE community for a variety of multidisciplinary teams including Teacher Services, the National Retraining Scheme and the Service Delivery Division.


Responsibilities

Essential Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have demonstrable experience of running large, diverse teams working on high profile, high pressure and high complexity digital projects
  • Be a specialist in the field of Content Design
  • Be skilled at mediating and mending relationships, communicating with colleagues at all levels and in areas of high risk or complexity
  • Building and leading a team of content design specialists
  • Growing the skills of team members, supervising the work of others, coaching other service designers
  • Be able to speak and represent the community to large audiences inside and outside of government
  • Have led teams in Agile and Lean practices. You create or tailor new ways of working and are always innovating to apply them in a wide range of contexts
  • Have experience in choosing the optimum format for displaying information to the user
  • Have experience in working with content publishing systems as well as working with product teams to prioritise requirements
  • Have detailed knowledge of web analytics and experience of using this data to improve content on the web
  • Be able to demonstrable experience of working in a culture of continuous delivery and improvement
  • Ensure that data is regularly analysed, maintained and improve extensive knowledge of user centric design and content strategy
