As a senior Interaction designer, you’ll be leading the design of accessible services across channels, devices, browsers, and platforms that deliver real value for our users, in your new role your will:

  • Understand user needs and create interactions across departmental and organisational boundaries
  • Lead work within a multidisciplinary team to turn research into user-centered services
  • Work with user researchers, business analysts and developers to turn concepts into user-centred services
  • Create and rapidly iterate low and high-fidelity prototypes to test and communicate ideas
  • Support teams and lead the organization to take a design thinking approach
  • Highlight opportunities to establish benchmarks and to identify potential areas of improvement
  • Take a leading role in growing the design community within DfE and across government
  • Collaborate with designers across government to identify and design scalable, cross-government design patterns and standards
  • Train and mentor other designers

    Responsibilities

    Essential Skills and Experience

    We're looking for designers to help set direction and embed good practice within teams and who are committed to using design to deliver a better experience and better outcomes for users of government services. You should:

  • a comprehensive understanding of interaction and user interface design
  • Broad experience of designing elegant, accessible, responsive user interfaces
  • Experienced in designing at low and high fidelity, including HTML and CSS for different screen sizes
  • Broad experience prototyping services and interactions
  • An ability to talk about, and advocate for, user-centred design in a way that other people understand
  • Broad experience of working with research and business analysis to inform design decisions
  • Have an ability to work autonomously and coordinate others
  • Have experience of working collaboratively in a dynamic agile environment and can help teams to manage and visualise outcomes and prioritise work.
  • Have experience of removing complexity from services
  • Can identify, understand and when needed, challenge constraints and is able to communicate these and work within them.
  • Experience of building and maintaining interaction pattern libraries
  • Experience of leading and facilitating workshops

    Desirable skills and experience

  • Design related degree or equivalent
  • Training and developing more junior designers
  • Have an understanding of Version control (Git), npm and Heroku

    Desirable criteria will only be assessed in the event of a tie break situation to make an informed decision.
