Remote / Manchester city centre

This is a remote first role. There may be a need for you to come into the Manchester office once or twice a month to connect with the team. Those living close to Manchester will also have the option to work in the office if desired.

We’re looking for a lead front-end engineer to join our growing engineering community at Co-op, as part of our brand-new technology function set up to support our Co-op customers, members, and colleagues. With a focus on developing an inclusive and accessible user experience we work as multi-disciplinary agile product teams, delivering simple applications that respond to real user needs. If you can bring us the combination of unparalleled front-end capability and the ability to coach and inspire your colleagues, we can offer you the chance to play a lead role in this meaningful work at Co-op. 

As one of our lead front-end engineers you’ll be the go-to for specialist knowledge and expertise. You’ll help us develop our community of practice, setting standards and ways of working for front end at Co-op. It’ll be a role with loads of collaboration and engagement, working with colleagues across; the wider technology function, within our digital design teams and more closely within other engineering disciplines. It’ll be down to you to make sure all the great work we do in the front-end space, links back to our key focus on our users, whether in products aligned to our retail business or funeralcare for example. 

What you’ll do 

  • lead the implementation of front-end development across multiple products
  • play a pivotal and proactive part in the development of our front-end community of practice, sharing knowledge and expertise
  • help develop our code quality standards and implementation
  • help to make choices about the front-end technologies we use
  • lead, guide and develop (coach) other engineers
  • contribute to, and expand, the Co-op design system
  • work collaboratively in programming sessions with other members of the team
  • work on large scale, challenging, design and code

This role would suit people who have  

  • significant experience working in a front-end role
  • experience working with web technologies i.e. HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • experience with React and/or Vue.js frameworks
  • a passion, and awareness for the importance of, building inclusive user experience (good design)
  • an interest in scalable code using methodologies such as BEM and micro front ends
  • experience working in a multi-disciplinary team with interaction designers, user researchers, content designers, testers, quality analysts, software and platform engineers
  • good relationship building and collaboration skill
  • the ability to work in a dynamic role, with multiple conflicting priorities
