About the job

Job summary

The Digitalisation Team working to the Chief Digital and Data Officer(CDDO) of the Army delivers, governs and accelerates digital and data outputs for the Field Army in line with the Army Data and Digital Plan and the Army Command Plan – Strategy Delivery Framework.    

You will work within a team of civil servants and contractors and assist with prioritising and supporting accelerated and optimised digital projects to get capability into the hands of the users in an Assured and coherent way. The cross-cutting nature of this work requires collaborative relationships with all of the other areas with CDDO and D Info including the Army AI Centre, Army Data Analytics team, Defence Learning Management Capability and Information Design Authority amongst others.  Shaping and driving digital transformation and data transformation and AI discovery activity as well as managing the pull through of discoveries and innovation activities to viable capabilities that the Field Army can adopt at speed.  

Aligned to the Army digital and data plan under the sub project CRATIS you will be instrumental in defining problem statements that are designed to exploit current and future technologies driving efficiencies and accelerating business capabilities. You will be part of a diverse team which has been recognised for its service and support to the Army’s data and digital change revolution.  

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

You will:

  • Champion Modern Ways of Working: Drive the coherence of use and ethics around the Army’s digital transformation in accordance with Defence /cross government and Army design Authority policies and direction
  • Empower Decision-Making: Develop user problem statements and recommend options to improve efficiencies and optimise current and future technologies that provide actionable insights to leadership, enabling data-driven decision-making at all levels
  • Drive Cultural Change: Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement by championing the use of digital technologies and across the directorate including AI initiatives, with support to empower teams to embrace new ways of working
  • Collaborate for Success: Partner with Defence Digital, Head Office, and the Strategic Hub to ensure alignment with broader MOD digital strategies and leverage best practices
  • Shape the Future: Stay at the forefront of digital and AI advancements, continuously exploring new applications and opportunities to enhance the directorate's capabilities 

In this role, you will help to drive the acceleration of digital and data transformation and change throughout  the Army’s Digital and Data ecosystem in the business space primarily by:

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to understand their business needs and objectives
  • Elicit, document, and analyse requirements for digital transformation initiatives
  • Translate business requirements into functional specifications for development teams
  • Analyse data requirements for digital transformation projects
  • Identify data sources, data mappings, and data transformations needed for successful implementation
  • Ensure data quality and integrity throughout the transformation process
  • Encourage better digital skills adoption as part of an upskilling of the workforce within the Army  

Comprehensive coherence across Army Digital and Data projects and programmes is vital for safe and responsible adoption, aligning with Ministry of Defence and government standards. 

Person specification

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who can handle the pressure of coordinating a wide range of activities and should be comfortable working within the data and digital profession, willing to challenge established norms and process and be prepared to adapt to changing priorities. Applicants should also have effective written, verbal communication skills, and display a positive and professional attitude. 

This opportunity will place you at the centre of data and digital transformation, particularly in the use and development of AI technology and services, driving efficiency and optimisation of data across the Army, it will require you to work across directorates and closely with Defence level organisations. The need for data and digital skills and capabilities is growing exponentially, and you will be able to influence much of this at the start of the transformation journey.

Essential:

  • Self-motivated with proactive and results-oriented mindset, and a passion for driving change
  • Expertise in digital transformation, business process improvement, and data, with a track record of successful implementation in complex environments
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams and stakeholders to embrace change
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a passion for data-driven decision-making
  • Understanding of digital and data technologies, MS Power Platform, and other relevant tools
  • Ability to communicate between the technical and non-technical  
  • Experience at presenting problem statements to senior boards and user groups

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with user focused agile methodologies and project management
  • Experience in a requirements analytic tool (Jura /Kanban et al)
  • Experience in performance and risk reporting and data visualisation (Architectures)
