ICYMI: Complex builds, smarter systems & calmer patch mornings

Complex eCommerce businesses rarely struggle because they lack technology. More often, the problem is that years of custom development, extensions and disconnected systems have made that technology harder to manage.

This month, we’re looking at three ways we’re helping businesses reduce that complexity:

  • Rebuilding Perfect Circuit’s Adobe Commerce frontend with Hyvä
  • Bringing Mesh Computers’ website and internal operations into one Magento platform
  • Developing a new tool to automate Magento patch updates

If your current setup is becoming difficult to maintain, manage or scale, talk to our eCommerce team.

A faster Adobe Commerce storefront for Perfect Circuit

Perfect Circuit is a California-based specialist retailer of electronic music gear, including synthesisers, drum machines, effects units, studio equipment and modular components.

Its Adobe Commerce website is more than a product catalogue. It also acts as a content and education hub for a technically knowledgeable audience, supporting a large volume of traffic and complex customer journeys.

However, the site was still running on the older Luma frontend. This was limiting its performance, flexibility and long-term scalability.

Perfect Circuit needed a modern storefront without losing the specialist functionality its customers and internal team relied on.

See how we approached the Perfect Circuit rebuild.

Rebuilding with Hyvä

We delivered a fresh Hyvä frontend using Perfect Circuit’s approved designs, creating a faster, cleaner and smoother Adobe Commerce experience.

Before development began, we reviewed the existing setup, including its custom code, legacy functionality and third-party modules. This allowed us to identify what still added value, what needed to be rebuilt and what could be removed.

The project included:

  • Rebuilding the Adobe Commerce frontend with Hyvä
  • Implementing Hyvä Checkout
  • Auditing custom code and existing extensions
  • Removing unnecessary extension bloat
  • Improving product browsing and stock messaging
  • Supporting pre-orders and back orders
  • Maintaining complex, specialist product journeys
  • Building Hyvä Checkout compatibility for Afterpay and Synchrony

It was an opportunity to reduce technical debt and create a cleaner foundation for future development.

Protecting complex functionality

Perfect Circuit’s website needed to communicate product availability clearly while continuing to support finance options and specialist browsing journeys.

Testing therefore played a major role throughout the project. We worked closely with the Perfect Circuit team across the UK and California, checking checkout journeys, finance options, stock messaging and other business-critical functionality before launch.

The completed build gave Perfect Circuit:

  • A modern Hyvä frontend
  • A faster and smoother checkout experience
  • Clearer stock, pre-order and back-order messaging
  • Continued support for key finance journeys
  • Reduced extension bloat
  • A more scalable foundation for future development

The result is a storefront that feels better for customers and is easier to maintain and build upon behind the scenes.

Bringing Mesh Computers’ entire operation into Magento

Mesh Computers has been building and selling custom PCs since 1987. Its customers can choose different specifications, components and price points to create a machine suited to their needs.

That creates a much more complex eCommerce journey than selling standard products from a catalogue.

Mesh needed to manage constantly changing stock, margins, quotes, product bundles and custom configurations. However, its ageing bespoke system no longer gave the business the flexibility or control it needed.

The customer-facing website was dated and not properly optimised for mobile or tablet users. Behind the scenes, the team relied on several systems to manage sales, stock, quotes and wider operations.

It needed more than a new website. It needed a joined-up platform.

One platform for customers and the internal team

We replatformed Mesh Computers onto Magento 2 Open Source and created a new mobile-first Hyvä frontend.

We also built a custom ERP within the Magento admin, bringing its website, stock, quotes, orders and sales workflows into one central system.

The project included:

  • Moving Mesh from its bespoke system to Magento 2 Open Source
  • Building a mobile-first Hyvä storefront
  • Developing a custom ERP inside Magento
  • Centralising stock, quotes, orders and sales operations
  • Creating a PC configurator for custom builds
  • Introducing visual product options and live price updates
  • Improving filtering and product navigation
  • Integrating Mollie as the payment provider
  • Moving the site onto Aware hosting with bot protection
  • Matching URLs during migration to help protect existing SEO value

Supporting a smoother transition

Because the new ERP would sit at the centre of Mesh’s day-to-day operations, testing and data accuracy were critical.

We worked with the Mesh team to test the storefront, configurator, operational data and internal ERP workflows before launch. We also trained the team on the new system and created a transition period during which the old and new platforms could run alongside one another.

The new setup gives Mesh Computers:

  • A modern Magento 2 platform replacing its legacy system
  • A cleaner, mobile-first customer experience
  • Centralised ERP, website and stock management
  • A simpler internal quoting process
  • A more visual PC configuration journey
  • Improved navigation and product filtering
  • More scalable sales and operational workflows
  • A stronger foundation for reporting and future development

By combining Magento 2, Hyvä and a custom ERP, we created a platform that supports the customer journey and the people managing the business behind it.

Making Magento patch updates easier

Adobe recently made the lovely decision to be menaces and change how some of its patches work, moving away from the usual Composer patches or security releases towards isolated, individual patches.

Daniel Mulley, our Lead Backend Developer, explained to us that patching was already a process that could consume the development team’s entire morning.

Adobe patches often arrive overnight for us here in the UK. Previously, that meant patch mornings began with a frantic rush to review the release, allocate each client site to a developer, apply the patch, test it and coordinate the next steps.

The change to isolated patches had the potential to make an already time-consuming process even more complicated.

Instead of adding more manual work to every patch day, the team refactored the process and created a tool that automatically pulls, applies and tests new patches across our clients’ sites.

As Daniel Mulley explained:

“Previously, patch mornings meant allocating every site to a developer, then manually applying and testing each update. Now, patches are pulled as soon as they’re released, automatically applied and tested”

Ready before we reached the office

On the most recent patch day, every onboarded site had its patch applied and tested within three hours of the patch being released.

By the time the team arrived at the office, the patches had already been applied and tested. They were back with our project managers and just one scheduled deployment away from going live.

The new process means:

  • Less time taken away from other development work
  • Less manual coordination across the team
  • Faster responses to new Adobe patches
  • More consistent patch application and testing
  • A smoother process for project managers and clients
  • Far less frantic running around on patch mornings

It’s a good example of how our team works: when a process creates unnecessary work, we don’t simply accept it. We look for a better way to do it.

Different projects, one shared goal

Perfect Circuit and Mesh Computers required very different technical solutions.

One needed a faster Adobe Commerce frontend capable of supporting specialist customer journeys. The other needed to replace a bespoke legacy system and bring its customer-facing and internal operations together.

Our patch automation tool tackles another type of complexity: the recurring work required to keep Magento stores secure and updated.

Across all three, the goal is the same: reduce unnecessary technical friction and create eCommerce systems that are easier to use, manage and grow.

If your platform feels more complicated than it needs to be, we can help you understand what’s slowing it down and where the biggest opportunities lie.
