During the pandemic, borrowing soared and many of us utilised the convenience of BNPL on products. For some, this proved an effective means to manage finances and for others, it became a slippery slope into overspending and late payment charges.
The market to date has been unregulated and offers little protection to consumers. However, many would argue these products have enabled financial inclusion and offer vital credit.
Fintechs dominate BNPL, and typically follow one of three major existing business models, with consumer-centric application (app) models leading the market. This market has impacted traditional banks and stolen their slice of millennials and Ged Z consumers.
Manchester Digital wants to deep dive into the implications of regulating this market.
- Can regulation keep up with the tech?
- Will regulation drive down merchant fees and competition?
- Ultimately will consumers be protected and still have access to useful financial products?
- Is this the beginning of the end for BNPL providers?
