The FutureEverything conference will take you on a journey through the most cutting-edge developments in a range of exciting fields. Join us to hear about why governments should open up the data that they hold, and what we can do with this information to change our lives. Listen to leading artists and scientists discuss what we can dream and do with unlimited bandwidth. Visionary speakers will illuminate the science of the web, ways we can play the city like an instrument, how poetry can be encoded into DNA and how relationships between generations are going to change over the next hundred years. Our overarching conference theme of The City Experiment – Doing it Together links all these fascinating lectures into our evolving urban context.
There are two strands in FutureEverything of particular interest to Manchester Digital members.
Infinite Bandwidth, Zero Latency strand - 13 May 2010
Panel discussion and workshop organised by Manchester Digital working with the Open University and FutureEverything
- Panel discussion: 10.00 - 11:40 - Contact Space 2
- Workshop: 12.00 - 13.00 - Contact Space 3
First generation broadband technology gave millions of users an ‘always-on’ connection to the net for the first time. This led to unforeseen, unanticipated and disruptive new applications like Wikipedia and Youtube. Next generation fibre optic broadband will be an even bigger challenge, with the potential for almost unlimited bandwidth and latency approaching zero. The chances are technology will have taken another step ahead of imagination.
Can we imagine? Can we anticipate the sort of new applications and services that might develop? More importantly, what new technologies will become possible with effectively unlimited bandwidth and near-zero latency?
Open Data strand - 13 May 2010
- Moving the immovable: 10.00 - 11.40, Contact Space 3
- Navigating the Data Terrain: 14:00 - 15:30 13 May 2010 - Contact Space 2
