We are looking for an enthusiastic Network Engineer with a real passion for user experience and IT to join our lively Network team, supporting several sites and around 5000+ users. The post is based in our Manchester office only and requires on-site attendance due to the nature of the role.

Job description

We’re looking for a Network Engineer with a real drive and passion for excellent user experience, employee enablement and continuous improvement. You will need to have an analytical approach to problem solving, identifying risks, and mitigating any impact on wider organisation. Experience in stakeholder management, change control and as part of a DevOps or DevSecOps team would be desirable. 

The role resides within our Network Operation Support team who are responsible for the network infrastructure and platforms that our users rely on to produce official statistics to allow the Government to make informed decisions. 

The role is varied and will involve you working with various network technologies, from traditional wired networks to virtual wireless and cloud-based systems. The role will also involve managing service desk calls relating to firewall requests, network connectivity queries, through to applying software updates and upgrades on various network infrastructure. 

As a member of the Network Operation Support team, you will be responsible for supporting and maintaining new and existing network infrastructure, services, products and platforms. The ideal candidate would have an interest in networking, cyber security (zero trust) and cloud based network solutions. 

There may be a requirement to travel to our Data Centres based in Corsham, Wiltshire and Farnborough, Hampshire on an adhoc basis. This may be sometimes at short notice due to the nature of this role. The role will also require some out of business hours working. You will be able to make use of our flexible working policy and overtime will be available for outside of business hours working.

Responsibilities

For the services, products and platforms supported, as a Network Engineer your responsibilities will include (but not limited to):

•    Managing incidents, requests, changes and problems.
• Monitoring and event management of key network infrastructure.
• Managing the configuration, availability, security, capacity and performance.
• Applying software updates and upgrades to the recommended versions across all network infrastructure.
• Engaging in continuous improvement activities.
• Managing all aspects of the life cycle of assets from acquisition through to disposal.
• Maximising the use of tools and technologies to deliver operational excellence.
• Participating in wider communities of practice, identifying good practices we can adopt and sharing our experiences.
•    Sharing knowledge of tools and techniques and collaborating to improve the capability of the team.

Essential Skills Criteria

•    You can demonstrate an understanding of information security and the types of security controls that can be used to mitigate security threats within solutions and services. 
• You own a problem until a new owner has been found or the problem has been mitigated or resolved.
• You can troubleshoot and identify problems across different technology capabilities. 
• You can understand the core technical concepts related to the role, and apply them with guidance.
•    You can take inputs from various sources and use these to support the delivery and/or operation of a service. 

In addition to the above essential criteria, we’d like to hear more about any experience you have in the following areas: 

•    Cisco Hardware e.g. Core Switches and Access Switches
• Firewalls - e.g. Checkpoint, Cisco ASA, VMware Distributed Firewalls
•    LAN / WAN technologies
