What you'll do

You will be part of CDDO and the Data Strategy and Standards (DS&S) Directorate at an exciting time as we build a new data governance and policy function and establish a Data Architecture Design Authority to sit alongside the established Data Standards Authority.

We want to improve services for end users and improve how new policies are developed through the effective use and reuse of data. One of our areas of focus is to look at the way government manages its data and information assets more effectively.

As the Open Data and Transparency Lead you’ll:

  • contribute to the ongoing development of a strategy and underlying policies on the way that HMG manages its data and makes it available openly for re-use
  • lead on the research, analysis and interpretation of evidence to support new open data and transparency policy development
  • lead on the UK’s brief for the Open Government Partnership, supporting the UK’s membership on the steering committee and overseeing the ongoing development and delivery of the current UK National Action Plan
  • engage with multiple government organisations and groups in order to produce policy products that meet the needs of multiple stakeholders
  • produce very high quality written communications for official and ministerial submissions, responses to parliamentary questions and Freedom of Information requests, as well as writing in styles appropriate for blogs and reports.

Who you'll be

You will be self-motivated, be comfortable with ambiguity and be able to work effectively at pace. You will be able to communicate your ideas clearly and concisely, be open to new ideas and be able to work successfully with a diverse range of people.

This role requires:

  • experience of working independently and leading significant, high-profile pieces of work, with limited oversight/input
  • experience of working on data strategy or policy development, with the ability to think creatively and see the bigger picture
  • experience of working on open data and/or data sharing initiatives
  • a skilled and confident communicator - comfortable engaging with and challenging internal and external stakeholders, able to work independently to understand and balance competing demands from internal and external stakeholders, including the Cabinet Office (CO) Permanent Secretary and Ministers
  • able to deliver at pace and work in a complex environment with limited oversight
  • a track record of leading, inspiring and managing teams, setting objectives and developing skills and capabilities.
