ICYMI... Vibe Coding is 2025's word of the year

Collins Dictionary named ‘vibe coding’ as its Word of the Year for 2025, and it’s causing a stir among tech communities. From LinkedIn threads to developer blogs, everyone seems to have an opinion - some are excited, others cautious, and a few dismiss it entirely, (see one of our devs’ succinct answer: 💩…)

At Aware Digital, we work with developers and tech teams experimenting with AI every day. In this post, we’ll break down what vibe coding actually is, why it’s generating so much buzz, and what it could mean for businesses exploring AI-assisted software workflows.

The conversation

Vibe coding is a chatbot-driven software development approach in which developers describe a project or task to a large language model (LLM), which generates source code. The human does not review or edit the code directly; iteration occurs by running the code and asking the AI for improvements.

The central debate is obvious: is vibe coding a revolutionary AI assistant that accelerates software development, or a shortcut that creates more problems than it solves? On one hand, it can be a breakthrough for prototyping and internal tooling, enabling rapid development without extensive coding experience. On the other hand, it can be risky - especially for less-experienced programmers - due to maintainability issues, hidden bugs, and potential security vulnerabilities.

The facts

Vibe coding allows teams to generate functional code quickly and lowers the barrier to entry, letting even those with limited coding experience contribute to software projects.

Vibe coding shines in experimental contexts. It’s ideal for testing MVPs, building internal tools, or prototyping features that teams want to iterate on quickly. It can also empower non-experts to contribute meaningfully to a project, giving businesses a way to democratise certain types of coding work.

That said, it is not suited for high-stakes production systems, complex enterprise platforms, or customer-facing applications where reliability, maintainability, and security are critical. Attempting to deploy AI-generated code without human review can create technical debt and expose systems to risk.

Team insights

We asked the Aware Digital team for their take on vibe coding, and the reactions were… hopeful.

What’s one word you’d use to describe ‘vibe coding’?

Umar Miah, Lead Front-End Developer:

“Still new.”

Ben Wake, Front-End Developer:

“Worrying.”

Daniel Mulley, Back-End Developer:

“Emerging.”

Do you vibe code? If so, when?

Ben, Front-End Developer:

“The uptake is largely with people who have a little bit of knowledge, just enough to get something useful out of it as a 'Vibe Code' that is. Major dev players - Mark Shust - for example, swear by AI but use it as a tool, with the understanding that it has limitations and know where they are. Ultimately, they have the skillset to know how to generate the best prompts for the best results, but even then, they review and refine their questions”

Dan, Back-End Developer:

“I do, mostly for mundane or repetitive tasks that don’t require deep problem-solving - like building skeletons for modules or compiling routes into controllers.”

Umar, Lead Front-End Developer:

“Not tried it yet. Probably works well for some projects, but not sure about eCommerce platforms. I haven’t invested time to explore it fully.”

Is there any helpfulness to it, or is it all just hype?

Ben, Front-End Developer:

“Early adopters with some coding knowledge can get useful results, but it’s very much a tool rather than a replacement. You still need to know how to prompt it and refine outputs. I keep it at arm’s length.”

Dan, Back-End Developer:

“There’s a lot of hype, but also promise. I hope it remains a tool for developers to use and grow in power as an assistant, rather than replacing developers entirely.”

Umar, Lead Front-End Developer:

“Too early to tell if it’s hype, but AI is scaling rapidly worldwide. That’s driving the attention and buzz around vibe coding.”

Common misconceptions

Vibe coding is misunderstood in a few key ways.

First, it does not replace developers - human oversight is still essential to ensure maintainability, security, and code quality.

Second, AI-generated outputs are not perfect; they depend on clear prompts, iteration, and testing.

Third, it’s not just a hobbyist trend - even enterprise teams use it for rapid prototyping and internal projects. Ultimately, while some critics label it chaotic or unreliable, structured workflows and proper governance enable teams to utilise it safely and effectively.

Why it matters

Vibe coding matters because it reflects a shift in how AI is integrated into software development. For businesses, it offers several tangible opportunities: prototyping ideas faster, empowering non-expert team members to contribute, and accelerating internal innovation.

It also underscores the need for careful oversight. Errors, technical debt, and security risks are real, but with structured testing and governance, teams can experiment safely while benefiting from the speed and flexibility AI provides.

In practical terms, vibe coding can shorten development cycles for internal tools or experimental features, reduce the upfront investment in coding resources, and encourage creative problem-solving across teams.

Cultural significance

Collins Dictionary naming vibe coding as Word of the Year signals more than a trend in developer slang. It marks a moment where AI is reshaping the nature of work itself. In 2025, generating functional software through iterative AI prompts is no longer a niche experiment - it’s becoming part of mainstream conversation. How businesses and developers respond now could define workflows and skillsets for years to come.

Conclusion:

Vibe coding is not a magic wand for software development, nor is it a fad. It’s a powerful tool when used with the right expertise, offering rapid prototyping, experimentation, and a way to involve non-coders in meaningful ways. But it comes with limits: human oversight, testing, and governance remain essential. For businesses exploring AI-assisted workflows, the key takeaway is balance - leverage the speed and creativity AI can bring, but don’t skip the fundamentals of maintainability, security, and skilled review. As AI continues to reshape how we build software, understanding tools like vibe coding will be critical to staying ahead - without getting caught up in the hype.

What do you think? Will you be 'vibe coding' in the future, or do the old methods work the best?
