HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is the language which supports web pages across the world, but to many, it just looks like a collection of random words, numbers and colours. This session will start you on a journey to understanding how to read HTML, write your own basic code, learn how CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) can bring your code to life, and give you lots of hints and tips on continuing your learning once the session has ended.

About the course

Over the course of the day you'll learn:

- What is coding?
- What HTML and CSS are, and why they’re important to a digital world
- The basics of the coding languages
- Some hands-on practice coding
- Building your first webpage
- Tips and tricks on how to hack your code
- What other coding languages are available

The course will start at 10:00am and finishes at 4:00pm. Lunch is served at 12:30pm.

Who is the course for?

Total beginners. You do not need to have any coding experience to attend. This course is ideal for someone who wants to get to grips with the basics of web development.

Equipment you'll need

Please bring a laptop computer with Windows, Linux or OS X installed. You will not need to install any software, but you should have a modern web browser. Our preference is the latest version of Firefox or Google Chrome, but the latest Internet Explorer or Opera will be fine too. If you don’t have access to a computer please let us know in advance so we can arrange one for you. If you feel more comfortable using an external mouse, please bring one too.

Participants will be using the brilliant free learning platform Codecademy for some practical activities, so please sign up for an account before the workshop.

Cost

The cost is £100 (inclusive of VAT). This covers:

- One day of tuition
- Lunch and refreshments

We have a limited number of bursary places available on this course for a reduced rate of £80. These are open to people who are underemployed, unemployed or full-time students. Please contact us (details below) for more information.

Liz Hardwick is a self-confessed geek, spends most of her spare time organising and supporting a variety of local and national organisations, and is an advocate of open source technologies. Liz taught herself coding back in 2002 when she built her first website in Drupal, and is co-founder of DigiEnable, a Digital Training, SEO & Content Services Company.

Liz’s background is in broadcasting, having also spent several years creating media for a number of charities, and she is one of FlockGlobal’s Founding50. Liz is also proud to have won a National Digital Leaders award in 2014 and is a published author on Digital Storytelling.
