What you'll do

You’ll ensure GOV.UK content is accessible, innovative and scalable. You’ll be responsible for content strategy and standards for all GOV.UK channels and you’ll push the boundaries of the GOV.UK proposition by trialling and scaling the use of alternative content formats across our website and beyond. 

You’ll forge new external partnerships and expand GOV.UK content into new channels and mediums, including third-party social, search, LLMs, app and notifications. And you’ll build and lead our multidisciplinary content innovation team, who will prototype the latest in publishing and automation technologies to accelerate and scale our content publishing tools.


Reporting to the Deputy Director for Content, you’ll work closely with the Head of Content Publishing and will be an integral member of the GOV.UK Content Leadership Group and the Heads of GOV.UK community, and will help set and assure direction and strategy for GOV.UK’s multi-disciplinary product feature teams. 

As the Head of Content Development you will:

  • oversee targeted trialling, adoption, and scaling of alternative content formats and publishing capabilities across the GOV.UK web estate, including audio, video, and large language models
  • work closely with senior leadership to define and communicate a clear vision and strategy for expanding GOV.UK onto third-party channels and platforms
  • work closely with the Head of Content Publishing to set and assure the GOV.UK content strategy, standards, and style guides for all GOV.UK owned and operated channels
  • oversee the design and implementation of data and insight tools that can be used to measure the impact of and identify improvements to the GOV.UK content publishing model
  • build new external partnerships that augment and enhance the GOV.UK offer across third-party channels and platforms
  • establish and measure meaningful Objectives and Keys Results to direct and assure all channel performance
  • work closely with the multidisciplinary teams across GOV.UK to implement and assure improvements to the GOV.UK content publishing model and GOV.UK user experience
  • stay networked across and informed of wider industry trends to ensure GOV.UK keeps pace with and can respond to future developments

  • leading teams that develop and distribute content using a variety of content formats and channels, including web, social, third-party owned and operated, audio, video, and long-form written content
  • establishing and embedding a data-driven culture, using data and insights to measure performance, target priorities, and identify improvements to content operations
  • operating in and influencing direction of multi-disciplinary functional senior management teams, with proven ability to balance narrow interests with business needs and to reconcile tactical goals with strategic objectives
  • building effective relationships with diverse and demanding stakeholders, influencing at senior levels, and monitoring and evaluating complex sets of interactions across multiple levels, teams and organisations.
