The MBTP Principle Engineer (Head of Engineering) will lead on the engineering performance management, oversight and engineering strategy for the Migration and Borders Technology Portfolio (MBTP). As the driving force behind a push to consistent methods of designing, building, deploying and running software and engineered systems you will also take a leadership role in supporting our engineering delivery teams as an SME; you may be expected to take charge of engineering across an ensemble of teams, or in a particular area of the business, to help build our cross department engineering community, and to contribute to the development of our department wide software engineering guidance and standards.

 

As a Principal Engineer your work will also have an external focus, feeding insight into project/Programme management so that appropriate resourcing, deployment and build decisions can be made as well as assurance of teams/processes such that engineering in their area is up to required quality standards. You will be the central point of contact for engineers in your area, ensuring the systems produced are sustainable and meet DDaT (Data, Digital and Technology) strategy.

 

Your main day to day responsibilities will be:

 

  • Supporting implementation against strategy; leading multiple engineering teams in line with our architecture and professions.
  • Supporting the development of a strong technical talent pool; coaching and mentoring as necessary.
  • Ensuring the engineering activities undertaken in teams across Migration and Borders are following suitable standards.
  • Supporting technical decision making, feeding into roadmaps and overall strategy for the Engineering function. Presenting decisions up and down the organisation clearly.
  • Coordinating with other engineering leads across the Migration and Borders supplier landscape and internal to form an overall community, acting as the central point of contact in your area and leading collaborative efforts.

Due to business requirements this post is full-time, compressed hours and flexible working are available.

You’ll have a demonstrable passion for developing high quality engineering outcomes and working with high performing and leading-edge technology and teams. You will need to be able to provide the following key functions within the role:

 

  • Providing leadership for engineering quality, including developing quality frameworks, performance engineering, security management, test and code quality coverage, metrics and observability.
  • Leading the adoption and subsequent evolution of engineering standards within the Migration and Borders Technology Portfolio.
  • Develop a culture of Engineering Performance Management and then measure, report, and manage change.
  • Creating a community of engineering within Migration and Borders and participating across wider engineering delivery in the Home Office.

London: £73,200 min - £80,520 max. 

This post is eligible for an additional skill allowance up to £13,700 per annum
