Debunking the Leadership Myth (part of the Big Networking for Small Businesses series)

This event has now ended.

Debunking the leadership myth

Getting the best from your people is always challenging. The very word “leadership” can send a shiver up the strongest spine, and endless books and LinkedIn posts offering “the secrets of leadership” don’t help.

If you’re in a position where you've had to make decisions that affect others, about what people do and how they do it, why not join us for an informal and informative discussion about the reality of leadership. We’ll debunk myths, explain how we’ve collectively got to where we are, and give you some practical pointers to make the leadership aspects of your role a little less daunting and a little more productive.

This month's guest speaker: Rob McKay, Senior Lecturer in Enterprise Practise

Rob has worked in the field of leadership and management development and innovation for the last 12 years, holding prior positions at Keele and Staffordshire Universities. He has spoken on leadership, growth and innovation to a range of business and professional audiences from across the world.

Prior to returning to academia in 2010, Rob worked in the field of economic development and regeneration for over a decade, in a variety of roles focusing on business growth and investment.

In his spare time, Rob is a sled dog racer (2x UK Championship wins), he took up paddle boarding in 2021, and has been an intermittent student of Tai Chi since 2001.

Why Big Networking for Small Businesses?

We know that the best way to stay motivated as a business owner is to have a support structure around you. Everyone needs a gang of business buddies that are there when you need them.

Our sessions are a chance to have real conversations, build links and, most importantly, have fun.

What to expect...

At each session, you'll find a relaxed room full of old and new friends catching up over cups of tea and snacks!

Each month, you'll hear from a guest speaker who has launched their own business. You'll have time to meet your peers before and after the guest speaker. And you'll be able to find out about the funded business support on offer to help you grow your business, too.

Our sessions are run as part of our Help to Grow: Management programme but you don't need to be part of the course to attend these networking sessions. They're open to all small business owners and managers.
