The Accessibility Standards and Strategy Team is creating an inclusive culture within DWP, by empowering colleagues so they deliver products, services and internal communications, which are accessible, inclusive and comply with accessibility legislation.
We research, document and share best practice to educate DWP. We monitor, document and report on compliance across our services and hold teams accountable when they do not meet the standards expected of any Public Sector Body.
We are looking for a skilled frontend developer to join our established team and help us to continue our mission and ensure the highest levels of digital accessibility for both our customers and colleagues in DWP.
The first year of this post will include intensive training in digital accessibility. If you already have experience in accessibility, this will be an advantage.
Job description
You will work in the Accessibility Standards and Strategy Team to test web products and provide consultancy and training for our learning and development teams.
You will:
- Engage in a 1-year development programme to ensure you have a high level of knowledge about digital accessibility, assistive software and related legislation and standards.
- Consult with product teams, to help and support them in creating accessible web services.
- Deliver training sessions on web accessibility.
- Engage with and contribute to the cross-government accessibility networks.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Engage with the Accessibility Development Programme to enable you to become a Web Accessibility Specialist.
- Responsible for building accessible interfaces that work across multiple devices and browsers.
- Work within a test driven development (TDD) environment with modern web development tech stacks.
- Write and share quality test-driven code, using modern frameworks and development techniques.
- Responsible for ensuring that the design and implementation of services is consistent, both internally and with the rest of wider UK government services.
- Responsible for seeing the bigger picture within which our services operates to help define and maintain standards.
- Responsible for contributing to code reuse and contributions to shared repositories.
- Responsible for undertaking training to upskill on Front-end development techniques, methods and tools to further develop knowledge and skills.
