Using AI when applying for Civil Service roles

Artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude and Gemini can be useful when preparing job applications or interviews. They help you organise your thoughts, check clarity, and find publicly available information about organisations or policies. However, they mustn't be used to misrepresent your experience or generate answers that aren't genuinely yours.

The Civil Service is interested in understanding your real motivations, achievements and skills. A strong application should clearly show how your experiences relate to the role, what drives you to do your best work, and what you’ve achieved. AI can support your writing and preparation — but it should never take your place.

Used appropriately, AI can help you clarify your ideas, tidy up spelling and grammar, and research public information. You might use it to summarise a government policy, explore leadership behaviours, or structure your examples more effectively. Asking AI to help you present your leadership experience using a clear format like STAR can be helpful, so long as the examples and reflections are your own.

AI can also support your interview preparation. For example, it might help you practise responding to common behaviour questions or offer useful tips on body language and communication. You can ask it to review a job description and suggest relevant practice questions. Again, the goal is preparation — not performance. Using AI during a live interview or assessment isn’t allowed.

Authenticity really matters. Your application should reflect your real skills and values. Every applicant is assessed on merit, and honesty is central to that process. Civil servants are expected to uphold the Civil Service code, which includes values like integrity and transparency. You’ll be asked to confirm your information is accurate before submitting, and misuse of AI could result in your application being rejected.

AI should help you express who you truly are — it’s not a shortcut to becoming someone else. When used well, it can help you sound clearer and more confident, while still staying true to yourself.
