Starling was founded in 2014 with a clear, ambitious goal: to build a better bank. We didn't just want to create another financial institution; we wanted to fundamentally change the way people and businesses interact with their money. Since receiving our banking license in 2016 and launching our first accounts in 2017, we have consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible in fintech.
We were the first digital bank in the UK to turn a profit, and we’ve been named Britain's Best Current Account year after year. Our success has been built on a foundation of world-class technology, transparency, and a relentless focus on customer experience. Why Manchester?
Our move to Manchester in early 2023 was a natural next step for us. When we were looking for a home for our fourth UK office, Manchester was the obvious choice. The city is a powerhouse of tech talent and creative heritage, and its vibrant ecosystem perfectly aligns with our culture of innovation.
We’ve set up shop in the Landmark building at St Peter’s Square, a space that reflects our commitment to sustainability and modern working. Since opening our doors, we’ve been focused on scaling our team here to include up to 1,000 specialists across software engineering, data science, cybersecurity, and customer operations. We aren't just here to fill seats; we are here to integrate into the local community and draw from the incredible pool of graduates and professionals that the North has to offer.
The Next Frontier: Engine by Starling
As we’ve matured, we’ve realized that the proprietary technology we built to power Starling is something the rest of the world needs. This led to the birth of Engine by Starling, our global Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) business.
Engine allows other banks around the world to use the same cloud-native technology platform that we use. It’s a complete, modular banking solution that helps other institutions modernise their systems, launch new digital products quickly, and provide better experiences for their own customers. By diversifying our model this way, we’ve evolved from a leading digital bank into a global technology provider.
