Two data leaders on reaching your next stage, the traps that catch well-intentioned organisations, and where AI genuinely fits.
There are two instincts when an organisation looks honestly at its own data, and both of them can be expensive. But there is a third option.
The first is to fix everything before building anything. Spend two years on foundations, lose sponsorship somewhere in year two, and end up further back than when you started. The second is to assume AI or a new platform will find a way round the mess. It won't. The failures just arrive later, and with more confidence attached.
Neither instinct is wrong exactly. They're both reaching for the same thing: a way to stop guessing.
The Data Maturity Curve gives that third option a shape. It maps the way forward in five stages: Fragmented, Reported, Governed, Operational and Predictive. It runs from data that has to be hunted down, through reports that describe last month, to data that shapes what happens next. A large share of mid-sized organisations sit at the ‘Reported’ stage for years, because the reports are good enough to run the business. Getting from reports to returns means knowing what the next stage actually asks of you.
The organisations that actually move up the curve are the ones that find a third option, because they ask a different question entirely: what does this specific outcome depend on, where do those parts of the business sit on the curve today, and how far up do we need to take them, no further?
In this session, James Ridgway, CTO at The Curve, is joined by Ryan Jamieson, Managing Director UK at Calybre, to work through what that looks like in practice. Using the Data Maturity Curve as the map, they’ll cover the specific, unglamorous work that moves one domain from where it sits today to the next stage. They’ll also cover the common pitfalls that catch organisations on the way up.
The session covers:
What moving up each stage of the curve involves, and why it’s a decision about one domain, such as customer or finance data, and one outcome, not the whole organisation at once
- The step most organisations skip: naming an owner with the real authority to settle what data actually means
- The leapfrog trap: why buying a platform before that ownership question is settled adds spend without adding maturity
- Which AI works at every stage of the curve, and what has to be true before AI can act inside a live process, rather than just draft and summarise around the edges
- The one thing that can’t be fixed retrospectively, recording what actually happened, and why it’s worth starting now regardless of what stage you’re at
No technical background is required. This session is aimed at operations, data and leadership teams who already know roughly where they sit and want a concrete route to the next stage of data maturity, not another diagnosis of where they are now.
Viewers will leave with a clear view of what moving up the curve actually requires for their organisation, the traps that make investment fail even when the intent is right, and where AI genuinely fits at each point along the way.
