Summary

You will be an enthusiastic and experienced Service Designer who understands how to design services end to end and front to back. You will be confident in navigating a complex environment to drive the best outcomes for our citizens and colleagues.

With consideration for the department’s policy goals, target operating model, technology strategy and transformation objectives, you will facilitate co-creation; building consensus with stakeholders as you go. It’s a complex landscape and you’ll need to use your skills as a persuasive and engaging communicator.

Job description

As a Senior Service Designer you are an experienced practitioner. You will have experience in driving awareness of service performance and improvement needs which have resulted in successful service outcomes.

You understand user needs and business or policy goals and are able to visualise whole services, both end to end and front to back, across business areas or departments in order to reduce or remove issues and problems.

You will be able to lead a small team of service designers or work with senior stakeholders to establish service design methods, leading communication with stakeholders, leading workshops and using design patterns to support strategy and decision making across their team or business area.

You are able to define good practice and make sure that useful guidance, tools and patterns are available across services and teams to solve recurring problems for users. You will support the service design community by organising or taking part in meet-ups to share work openly.

Salary Information

National Salary for this role is from £50,155 (Band min) to £60,781 (Band max).

London Salary for this role is from £55,149 (Band min) to £65,950 (Band max).

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

Selection process details

Stage 1: Application

Your application will consist of three parts:

  1. A Personal Details application form.
  2. Your employment history detailing your responsibilities, skills, accomplishments, plus your qualifications and relevant training. Please copy this information into the box field provided.
  3. Personal statement up to 750 words.

When giving details in your employment history and personal statement you should highlight your experience in line with essential criteria below:

  • Shapes and shares communications with consideration of the audience.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues from across digital and non-digital roles, being mindful of different drivers and needs when designing end to end services.
  • Investigates problems and utilises large amounts of complex information to inform and proposes opportunities for improved service design.
  • Regularly monitors your own and team’s work against milestones ensuring individual needs are considered when setting tasks. Act promptly to reassess workloads and priorities when there are conflicting demands to maintain performance.

The sift panel will use the information in your employment history and personal statement to assess your experience, skills and knowledge against the essential criteria above.

Stage 2: Interview

If you’re successful at sift stage you will be invited to a video interview via Microsoft Teams. There, you will be assessed against the experiences listed in the essential criteria below.

You will be asked to do a short (10 minutes) presentation on a specific topic. Further details will be provided to candidates invited to interview. 

Interviews will take place from Mid/Late September
