A Day in the Life of a Junior Web Developer, Will Buckingham, ThinkEQ

How did you get into your current role?

I got into my current role through an apprenticeship agency which specialises in computing apprenticeships in software and hardware. They connected me with ThinkEQ, who invited me in for an interview. It was a great meeting, and they invited me to join as an apprentice, and that’s how I got started.

What do you enjoy most about working at ThinkEQ?

The team working environment is great, everyone is supportive, and they’ve given me the opportunity to get stuck into really exciting projects. They’re very encouraging, and it’s been nice to get feedback and acknowledgement from my peers in agency meetings about how I’m contributing to successful projects.

What types of projects does your organisation typically undertake, and what are the typical project goals and objectives?

I specialise in web development and app development, so I get to use a variety of CMS systems and frameworks to deliver projects. I enjoy working with senior members on product development and love being part of a team that gets to design solutions and bring them to life.

Have you developed new skills whilst being in the role?

Absolutely! Joining as part of an apprenticeship scheme, I have had a framework to work with, but being in a hands-on position like this meant I have been getting real-world experience and seeing the results of what I deliver. In addition to practical skills, I have also been learning more about being part of a team, working with clients and how to conduct myself in a professional environment.

Can you share anything about the tools and methodologies you use?

I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of tools, including WordPress, Umbraco, Laravel and Ionic and continue to progress my skills within these tools.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day depends on the type of project. So I could be working with the team on the development of a brand new products, maintaining site health for client websites or training. I enjoy the variety.

What opportunities are there for professional development and growth within your organisation?

There are many different opportunities for development at ThinkEQ. Through mentorship in the agency, I got to understand the dev process in detail and understand project lifecycles. I was given so many opportunities to get stuck into client work and strategy development, so I felt that my contributions were valid and considered, which helped to improve my confidence in the role and the dynamics of the team. After finishing my apprenticeship, I was asked to join the team full time which is incredible! I enjoy the team, the culture and the structure of the agency, so I’m really excited about my future.
