Organisations supplying the UK defence sector increasingly need to understand their Defence Cyber Certification (DCC) position. Whether you have been asked to demonstrate DCC Level 0 by a prime contractor, a procurement team or the MOD itself, the first step is understanding how ready your organisation actually is.
The Zenguard Cyber DCC Level 0 Readiness Checker provides a quick, structured way to identify potential gaps before you begin the formal certification process. The assessment takes approximately 5–10 minutes to complete.
You do not simply receive a percentage score. At the end of the assessment you receive a personalised branded DCC remediation report showing what to address next , turning the results into a practical action plan rather than leaving you with a number and no idea what to do.

What Is DCC Level 0?
Defence Cyber Certification (DCC) is the certification scheme developed by the Ministry of Defence to help ensure that defence supply chain organisations have appropriate cyber security controls in place. DCC Level 0 represents the entry-level foundation within the scheme and is relevant to organisations operating within appropriate areas of the defence supply chain.
DCC Level 0 builds on Cyber Essentials, the UK government-backed baseline cyber security standard. Holding a valid Cyber Essentials certificate is a prerequisite for DCC Level 0, but DCC Level 0 extends beyond the technical controls of Cyber Essentials to cover wider organisational readiness, data protection, resilience and scope management.
Important
The Zenguard Readiness Checker is a preparation and gap-assessment tool. It does not award Defence Cyber Certification.
Why Check Your DCC Readiness Before Assessment?
Finding problems during preparation is far preferable to discovering them when evidence is required during formal assessment. A readiness check helps you identify gaps early, giving you time to address them before they become blockers.
Common issues that can delay DCC preparation include:
- unclear certification scope
- missing Cyber Essentials evidence
- incomplete policies
- missing risk registers
- untested backups
- weak recovery arrangements
- insufficient evidence that controls operate in practice
- unclear ownership of security responsibilities
- missing continuity documentation
- incomplete MFA deployment

Understanding Your DCC Readiness Score
The Zenguard scoring system is straightforward: Yes = 2 points, Partially = 1 point, No = 0 points. With 50 questions, the maximum score is 100. Your percentage score places you in one of four readiness bands:
90–100: Ready to Progress
The organisation appears well prepared, although outstanding findings should still be reviewed.
75–89: Minor Gaps Identified
The organisation is progressing well but has areas that should be completed or evidenced.
50–74: Remediation Required
Multiple areas need attention before moving forward.
Below 50: Significant Preparation Required
Further preparation, documentation, or technical work is likely to be required.
Disclaimer
Your readiness score is an indication of preparation and is not a DCC certification decision.
The Six Areas Covered by the Readiness Checker
The Zenguard Cyber DCC Level 0 Readiness Checker uses 50 preparation questions across six readiness areas to help organisations assess the wider evidence, governance, Cyber Essentials, data protection, and resilience arrangements that may affect their DCC Level 0 preparation.
These are Zenguard Cyber readiness areas, not six official DCC Level 0 domains. They represent the practical areas we have found most relevant when helping organisations prepare.
1. Scoping
Defining and documenting your DCC certification scope is the foundation of the entire process. This area covers business locations, relevant systems, networks, cloud services, business processes, Cyber Essentials overlap, documented scope and management approval. Accurate scope matters because it defines the boundary of what will be assessed and certified.
2. Cyber Essentials
This area covers your current Cyber Essentials status, certification validity, appropriate scope, supporting documentation, and maintaining CE controls. Cyber Essentials is a mandatory prerequisite for DCC Level 0, so confirming your position here is essential.
3. Data Protection & GDPR Readiness
This area assesses broader organisational readiness around data protection, including Data Protection Policy, Privacy Notice, data protection responsibilities, breach management, subject access processes, staff awareness, and governance. These are framed as supporting governance rather than implying GDPR itself is a standalone DCC Level 0 control.
4. Data Protection Impact Assessments
This area covers your DPIA process, templates, completed DPIAs where required, evidence, review and remediation actions. DPIAs form part of Zenguard's wider readiness assessment to help ensure your data protection practices are documented and defensible.
5. Resilience & Risk Management
This area covers critical systems, risk register, risk ownership, business continuity, disaster recovery, recovery priorities, management review, testing and exercises. The aim is to confirm that resilience is not just documented but actively managed.
6. Practical Resilience Controls
This area covers backups, protected or off-site backup copies, backup monitoring, restoration testing, MFA, endpoint protection, cloud security, recovery arrangements and evidence that controls actually operate in practice. The focus is on practical evidence rather than policy-only documentation.
Your Branded DCC Readiness & Remediation Report
Completing the assessment generates a professional report personalised for your organisation. The report includes:
- organisation name
- assessment date
- overall readiness score
- readiness status
- section results across all six areas
- answers provided for each question
- identified gaps
- high-priority remediation actions
- medium-priority improvement actions
- recommendations and suggested next steps
The report can be used by directors, senior management, IT teams, compliance teams, cybersecurity providers and internal project owners to understand findings and manage remediation.
Not an official document
Your report is a Zenguard Cyber readiness and remediation report. It is not an official DCC certificate or MOD document.
Your report turns the assessment into a practical remediation roadmap rather than leaving you with a percentage score and no idea what to do next.
From Readiness Assessment to Remediation Plan
Your Yes, Partially, and No answers feed directly into recommendations. The purpose is to provide actions that can actually be completed rather than generic compliance statements.
Example: Risk Register
If an organisation does not maintain a documented risk register, the report recommends creating a formal register covering cyber, operational and continuity risks with a risk owner, likelihood, impact, treatment, target date and review status for each entry.
Example: Backup Restoration Testing
If backups exist but restoration has not been tested, the report recommends creating a documented restoration testing programme and retaining evidence of successful tests.
Who Is the DCC Level 0 Readiness Checker For?
The checker is designed for UK organisations that supply or hope to supply the defence sector, including:
- MOD suppliers
- defence subcontractors
- engineering companies
- manufacturers
- technology providers
- professional services suppliers
- SMEs working with defence primes
- organisations hoping to enter the defence supply chain
- businesses receiving DCC requests from customers or procurement teams
The assessment is particularly suited to micro, small and medium UK businesses that need a practical, low-cost way to understand their DCC position.
Already Have Cyber Essentials?
Cyber Essentials is an important foundation, but holding it does not necessarily mean an organisation has completed every aspect of its wider DCC preparation. Scope alignment, data protection documentation, resilience evidence and risk management practices all need to be in place.

What Happens If You're Not DCC Ready?
A readiness assessment is designed to find problems early. A low score does not mean your organisation has failed DCC; it means there are areas to address before you proceed. The report provides specific remediation examples such as:
- define DCC scope
- achieve or renew Cyber Essentials
- create missing policies
- establish a risk register
- improve backup arrangements
- test restoration
- improve MFA deployment
- formalise business continuity
- collect supporting evidence
- document processes
- close technical vulnerabilities

Organisations that do not want to manage the entire preparation exercise themselves can use the DCC Level 0 Fast Track, a supported route that may include readiness assessment, gap analysis, scope preparation, Cyber Essentials support, policy and documentation support, remediation guidance, evidence preparation, assessment preparation and certification journey support, depending on the package selected.
