  • No one predicted Wikipedia, Facebook and YouTube before broadband. These applications have changed the lives of millions.
  • Near unlimited disk space made applications like iTunes and MP3 possible - and severely disrupted the music industry.

What will happen when we have near unlimited bandwidth - so much that it doesn't matter any more?  Can we imagine the next wave of innovation?

IBZL - infinite bandwidth, zero latency - an invitation to imagine from Manchester Digital and the Open University

Once upon a time we had to fight for space on our hard disks to store emails and documents. Now we don't worry - if it's ever an issue it's because we've got too many HD films cluttering the disk up. Just as disk space has grown exponentially, so bandwidth has been growing at a similar pace - and latency (the delay between data leaving and arriving) has been shrinking. No one foresaw Youtube and Wikipedia before broadband came along. So what will it be like when bandwidth is so broad it no longer matters? What applications and services will we be using? And what should forward-thinking digital businesses be thinking about now?

Whoever gets this right could make a great deal of money - and change everything again.

This panel discussion - jointly organised with the Open University - will bring together some bright thinkers who have been looking at this issue, trying to imagine what the next wave of ultra-fast networks will unleash. Chaired by Lorne Mitchell, MD of Objective Designers and former Business Development Executive at IBM.

Free entry. Make sure you're there.
