Successful candidates will be offered the minimum of the pay scale, but in some circumstances salary negotiations will be dependent on the demonstration of skills and experience. All our roles come with an excellent benefits package, including the generous Civil Service Pension Scheme. Further salary increases depend entirely upon the outcome of our annual pay negotiation with central government. Job summary

At Companies House, we have a well-established User-Centred Design team within our Digital and Technology directorate, which includes a team of interaction designers, service designers, content designers, user researchers and performance analysts. Our services are critical for the UK economy, and as an organisation we are committed to making them as user-friendly and accessible as possible. 

We’re looking for an Interaction Designer who is passionate about designing digital services that everyone can use. Collaboration and communication are key to being successful within this role. 

Services we have recently designed include:

  • Apply to strike off and dissolve a company
  • Advanced company search
  • Register an overseas entity and tell us about its beneficial owners

Job description

In this role, you will be expected to: 

  • develop designs based on evidence of user needs and organisational priorities
  • be trusted to make good decisions and can recognise when to ask for further guidance and support
  • contribute to the development of design concepts
  • be able to accept and act on constructive criticism of your work, and review other people’s work
  • interpret evidence-based research and incorporate this into your work as part of an iterative design process
  • co-design with other designers (interaction, content, and service) to create services which meet the needs of a diverse range of users, whilst also meeting business needs
  • be comfortable presenting your designs as part of a collaborative feedback process
  • build relationships across Companies House and government to focus on the needs of our users and to influence stakeholders  

Experience of the GOV.UK Design System, the GOV.UK Prototype Kit, and tools such as Figma, Mural (and similar) and HTML and CSS would be advantageous but training will be provided.  

Person specification

We're looking for the following experience and skills, which will be assessed at sift and at interview.  Please refer to the bullet points below (in addition to the behaviours) when writing your personal statement.

We will provide training, if necessary, but we want the successful candidate to be able to display most of the following in their experience:

  • can absorb large amounts of sometimes conflicting information and use it to produce simple designs
  • can work to tight deadlines and manage their workload across several projects

  • can manage stakeholders’ expectations and is flexible - being capable of proactive and reactive communication
  • understands and works within the given constraints (including, but not limited to, technology, policy, regulatory, financial, and legal constraints), and challenges constraints that can be changed
  • is aware of the importance of ensuring services are accessible to all

You will be aligned to our Cardiff Office, where we are currently using a hybrid approach to the way we work. The degree of choice you have will depend on business need, your role and your day-to-day work activities and will be discussed at offer stage. The expectation for this role is 20% of your working week will be office based.
