This 12-month industrial placement is designed to provide digital undergraduate students real exposure to the digital workplace and what it means to work in government.
If you're currently studying towards an IT, Computer Science, Physics or Maths undergraduate degree an industrial placement year with us will give you a great chance to learn on-the-job skills, work on real projects and get paid a salary!

Job description
As a Data Engineer on an Industrial Placement, you’ll be responsible for design, development and maintenance activities to ensure efficient delivery of data pipelines to support wide variety of analytical and reporting use cases.
The role involves working with a wide range of modern technologies, applying best-in-class data engineering principles and standards, to ensure the delivery of high quality engineering pipelines.
You’ll work closely with other engineers and data professionals within autonomous multi-skilled teams, looking to continuously improve, share and build knowledge across the engineering community.
Your responsibilities will include but are not restricted to, the following:
- Working flexibly as part of a team to support delivery of services.
- Communicating and collaborating with a range of colleagues, learning how to translate technical concepts into non-technical language to stakeholders.
- Using programme languages and working on test phases and standards.
- Regularly review your own work and team’s work and take the initiative to suggest ideas to make improvements.
- Make effective and fair decisions, explaining how decisions have been reached in a clear and concise way, both verbally and in writing.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.
Qualifications
To be suitable for this role;
- Currently a undergraduate student, completing a IT, Computer Science, Physics or Maths degree.
- Willing to take an industrial / student placement within your undergraduate degree course from September 2022.

Salary Information
Salary for this role is from £27,565
Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.
Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.
Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.

Selection process details
Stage 1: Application
Your application will consist of three parts:
1. A Personal Details application form.
2. Personal statement up to 750 words.
When giving details in your personal statement you should highlight your experience working with the essential criteria below:
- Has passion and interest in Data Engineering and data related IT fields.
- Is adaptable, self-motivated with strong logical reasoning and problem solving skills.
- Has communication skills and teamwork.
- Awareness of digital technologies and one or more programming languages, including one of the following: SQL / Python / R / Java /Shell Scripting (BASH).
- To apply you must be a current undergraduate student, on an IT, Computer Science, Physics or Maths degree. You will be required to take an industrial / student placement within your undergraduate degree course from September 2022.
The sift panel will use the information in your personal statement to assess your experience, skills and knowledge against the essential criteria above.

Stage 2: Interview
If you’re successful at sift stage you will be invited to a video interview via Microsoft Teams. There, you will be assessed against the following experiences:
- The role data plays in business and society, now and in the future and how they have used data in your studies and projects to deliver insights and value.
- Collaborative working within teams, getting the best from yourself, others and overcoming challenges.
- Using programming languages to deliver high quality solutions and meeting or exceeding customer needs.
You will be asked to do a short 5 minute presentation on a specific topic. Further details will be provided to candidates 5 days prior to the interview.
Interviews will take place from mid March. Sift and interview dates to be confirmed.
Other information:
A reserve list may be held for a period of 6 months from which further appointments can be made.
Reserve list candidates will be posted in merit order by location.
You must meet the security requirements before you can be appointed. The level of security needed is security check.
For meaningful checks to be carried out individuals you will need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time, to enable appropriate checks to be carried out and produce a result which provides the required level of assurance. Whilst a lack of UK residency in itself is not necessarily a bar to a security clearance, and expectation of UK residency may range from 3 to 5 years. Failure to meet the residency requirements needed for the role may result in the withdrawal of provisional jobs offers.
