As a Lead Data Scientist in the Innovation Lab, you will be at the front foot of innovation and technology, make a real impact. You will help drive experimentation in new and emerging, technologies, analytical capabilities, and data models to understand their potential and value for the organisation.
Job description
As the Lead Data Scientist, you will be responsible for helping to steer a high-performing innovation lab that explores diverse cross-cutting problems and works with an multidisciplinary team to create technology-led solutions. You will play a prominent leadership role across the Department for Data & Analytics, collaborating across the department and nurturing a culture of continuous improvement and data assisted resolutions.
You will oversee the understanding and testing of diverse analytical and data driven initiatives that help to create alternative visions and of how services can be delivered in the future, you will offer an alternative perspective and stimulus to inspire change, this includes:
- Leading a consistent vision, energy and appetite for analytical and data innovation, supporting the development a high performing multi-disciplinary team that delivers numerous proofs of concepts, across various programmes and cross cutting challenges.
- Collaborating to build peer and senior relationships across the organisation and the Innovation eco-system including, across government , academia, business and start up’s in order to understand opportunity and how best new solutions could add value and solve problems.
- Stimulating awareness of the Innovation Landscape, you will have an ability to share intelligence on developments in and across the digital and data landscape, particularly those related to government policy or transformational priorities.
- Nurturing strong relationships between data science peers in DWP, other Government Departments and in industry and academia encouraging innovation, reuse and avoiding duplication.
- Stretching our data science understanding and machine learning capabilities by keeping up to date with the latest transferrable market and industry trends, emerging technologies, delivery accelerators and sharing knowledge and experience.
- Providing the appropriate safeguards to ensure all work adheres to key privacy, security and data protection regulations and also set procedures for ethical considerations such as unintended biases.
- Playing a key role in the community, defining recruitment strategies and career progression as well as contributing to Digital Practices in DWP overall.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

Salary Information
Salary for this role in London is from £66,252 (Band min) to £78,765 (Band max).
Where the maximum salary of £78,765 is offered, a Digital Allowance of up to £11,230 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.
Salary for this role in National locations is from £60,740 (Band min) to £72,933 (Band max).
Where the maximum salary of £72,933 is offered, a Digital Allowance of up to £15,000 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.
Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.
Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.
Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.

Stage 1: Application

- Understand how a high performing Innovation function operates and contributes to solving diverse cross cutting problems through rapid experimentation.
- You have experience of leading and inspiring multidisciplinary teams composed on technologies, data scientists and other professions to achieve breakthrough results. Able to work in fast paced changing environment with experience of agile working.

You will be asked to do a short (5 -10 minutes) presentation on a specific topic. Further details will be provided to candidates invited to interview.
