About the role
You’ll work within DVLA’s IT Services (ITS) Directorate, collaborating across:
- Engineering squads
- Architects and technical leads
- Business directorates
You’ll develop architectural patterns and solution designs, working closely with delivery teams to ensure solutions are robust, secure and operationally ready.
What you’ll be doing
As Lead Technical Architect, you will:
- Lead the technical design of systems and services, clearly justifying and communicating architectural decisions
- Assure solution quality, ensuring consistency with DVLA, DfT and government‑wide strategies
- Explore opportunities for cross‑government architectural alignment
- Work collaboratively with engineering squads to transition new solutions into live operation
- Set standards and provide architectural governance and assurance
- Mentor and support architects and engineers across teams
- Provide leadership to the wider architecture community
- Line manage and develop colleagues, creating an environment where people can thrive
Who this role is for

- Has operated as a technical or solution architect on enterprise‑scale systems
- Is confident owning architecture end‑to‑end, from design through delivery and assurance
- Enjoys working with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders

Essential experience
You’ll need strong experience of:
- Infrastructure and cloud technologies
- Unified communications and omni‑channel contact centre solutions
- Networking concepts (LAN / WAN / WLAN)
- Microsoft Entra ID, O365, and hybrid Active Directory environments
- Microsoft Azure Cloud Adoption Framework principles
- Designing systems that protect sensitive data
- Collaboratively creating and evolving solution designs
- Providing technical leadership, governance and assurance across complex solutions
You’ll bring excellent communication skills and be comfortable engaging with architects, engineers, testers, delivery managers and senior leaders alike.
