As a Lead Test Engineer, you’ll shape how quality is embedded across HMRC’s complex digital ecosystem, influencing delivery at programme and platform level.

• Core platforms are secure, resilient and scalable
• Delivery teams and suppliers work to consistent standards
• Services meet the highest expectations for reliability and user experience

Your role will span multiple programmes and platforms, working with both internal teams and commercial partners.

What you’ll be doing

As a Lead Test Engineer, you will:

Leadership & Collaboration

• Lead, coach and mentor test engineers across programmes
• Build a culture of quality, learning and continuous improvement
• Collaborate with product, platform and delivery teams
• Influence senior stakeholders and suppliers to drive quality outcomes

Test Strategy & Delivery

• Define and embed risk‑based, shift‑left testing strategies
• Ensure testing aligns with technical architecture and delivery priorities
• Promote consistent test standards across teams and suppliers

Technical Excellence

• Provide expert guidance across functional, non‑functional and automation testing
• Improve confidence in delivery through advanced testing approaches
• Identify opportunities to innovate and improve testing efficiency

Tooling, Governance & Assurance

• Evaluate and optimise test tooling (including AI‑assisted capabilities)
• Establish governance for supplier‑led testing
• Support CI/CD integration and platform tooling
• Provide clear test reporting, insight and risk‑based assurance
