Why this role?

Within HMRC’s Chief Digital & Information Office (CDIO), the Response Exceptions & Analytics (REA) group builds and runs large‑scale digital platforms that solve complex technical and operational challenges.

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer – Tooling & Automation, you’ll sit right at the centre of this work, leading the tooling that enables infrastructure‑as‑code, automated deployments, and continuous delivery across HMRC’s estate.

What you’ll be working on

You’ll join the Tooling & Automation Team, responsible for designing, supporting and evolving a shared tooling stack used by multiple services and teams.

The tools you support enable:

Operational Support & Continuity

  • Provide user administration and access support

Delivery & Standards

  • Work in line with Agile delivery practices, contributing to ceremonies and continuous improvement
  • Maintain and update HMRC standards documentation alongside delivery
  • Ensure knowledge transfer across the team

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead and support a team of infrastructure engineers
  • Act as a role model for best practice engineering
  • Work closely with architects, product managers and service owners
  • Contribute to workforce planning, budgets and technology roadmaps

Who this role is for

This role could be a great fit if you:

  • Are an experienced infrastructure or DevOps engineer
  • Enjoy building and supporting shared tooling platforms
  • Like leading teams as well as being hands‑on
  • Are comfortable working in complex, highly governed environments
  • Value collaboration and stakeholder engagement

Essential skills & experience

You’ll need strong experience with:

  • AWS
  • Windows & RHEL administration
  • Docker and containerisation
  • CI/CD pipelines
  • Terraform
  • Networking and reverse proxies (e.g. Nginx / Traefik)
  • Tooling such as GitLab, Jenkins, Vault, Nexus, Artifactory, AWX
  • Live operations support, Agile, DevOps and ITIL practices
