How to write a product photography brief that gets used

A product photography brief sets out what you sell, who the images need to reach, what they must communicate and where they will appear. You do not need to arrive with every image worked out. A useful brief makes the fixed requirements clear and identifies the decisions still to make together.

Send references that show the details

Send references that reveal the details the images need to reproduce: clear views of the front, back and relevant sides, close views of features such as a closure, clasp or label, dimensions when scale matters, and final packaging artwork. A mood image cannot confirm the exact construction of a product. If a view is missing, flag it.

Say what to take from each reference

A useful moodboard explains what to take from each reference. Mark whether an image is there for its light, colour, material, composition or casting. Otherwise, two people can look at the same picture and notice completely different things. Explain dislikes just as precisely as the things you like.

Count compositions and exports separately

A shot list translates the brief into individual images that can be quoted and reviewed. Give each composition a simple identifier, then list its exports underneath. This makes it easier to see whether “six files” means six different images or several versions of fewer images.

Make feedback specific

Feedback works best when it names the frame, identifies the issue and connects it to the brief. “The product looks wrong” is a broad comment. “The cap in frame A is taller than in the approved front reference. Please match that proportion” is feedback the creative can act on.

The full guide, with the seven-section brief as a PDF, a filled-in example and a checklist for before you send it, is on the Bilder Studio journal: https://bilder-studio.com/journal/product-photography-brief-template/
