The Chobble Template is a free and open source website template built on the Eleventy static site generator framework. It is editable through PagesCMS.org - a similarly free and open source editor for Github-hosted websites. Using this template and the instructions provided on the example site, small businesses can get a website up and running in under 30 minutes, using open source code they fully control and can adapt for any purpose.
A recent update to the template adds support for menus and menu items, with markers for vegan, gluten free, or any other dietary requirement. Items are edited through PagesCMS and changes reflected on the live site within a couple of minutes.
Many restaurant websites use PDFs to display their menus, which has some serious limitations:
- They are cumbersome to update
- They are hard to browse on mobile devices
- They are less accessible
- They have less value to search engines
In contrast, displaying menu items directly in the site ensures they can be easily read by all visitors and search engines alike.
This sounds like a minor thing, but given that the majority of visitors to restaurants visit their menu pages, making it as easy as possible to browse results in a higher conversion rate and more sales.
The menu support is the latest addition to the Chobble Template, which aims to be an all-encompassing template to suit the majority of business needs for "brochure" style websites, including products, categories, events, galleries, team members, pages, news items, and now menus.
