Manchester Digital publishes Sector Insights Report 2026

Last week at Digital Skills Festival 2026, Manchester Digital unveiled the Sector Insights Report 2026 - a deep dive into the realities, priorities and future direction of Greater Manchester’s digital and technology sector.

The report brings together insights gathered through a series of surveys and focus groups with digital and tech businesses across the region, capturing perspectives from organisations of all sizes. Published in partnership with Morson Edge, Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority, it reflects a shared commitment to understanding the sector and supporting its continued growth.

A challenging environment — but growing confidence

The findings show a sector still operating within a challenging and evolving environment, shaped by economic pressures, rapid technological change and ongoing skills shortages. However, there is also a strong and consistent message of adaptation and resilience.

Businesses across Greater Manchester are becoming more confident, clearer on their priorities and increasingly focused on how to grow in a sustainable way. After a period of caution, confidence is returning and growth is once again being actively pursued.

AI moves from hype to practice

Artificial intelligence features heavily throughout the report, but the tone has shifted. Rather than speculation, the emphasis is now on practical application — how organisations are embedding AI into day-to-day operations, products and services, and what this means for productivity, skills and competitiveness.

This more grounded approach reflects a sector that is maturing in its use of emerging technologies and thinking carefully about long-term impact.

Skills, gaps and shared challenges

The report also highlights a clear awareness of where skills gaps and challenges sit. From technical skills and leadership capability to talent attraction and retention, businesses are increasingly aligned on the issues holding back growth - and where targeted support, collaboration and investment can make the biggest difference.
