Manchester Data Centre Operator Expands near London

Teledata, a Datum Group company, has announced that a new data hall is open at the firm’s Farnborough data centre facility. Part of a £7 million investment, the new hall offers 380 rack positions, a cooling infrastructure for 1000kW of IT load with N+1 resilience and a power infrastructure for 1000kW of IT load with 2N resilience.

Sustainability was a key driver in the project and the new data hall has been designed to deliver efficiency and support net zero targets by utilising;

  • generators that use Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel, reducing the CO2 emissions during testing or emergency operation,
  • a UPS solution which uses lithium-ion batteries, removing the need for the additional cooling required when using traditional lead-acid battery banks and providing an extended life expectancy which will result in less frequent lifecycle replacements,
  • a cooling solution which has been highly optimised to dynamically respond to demand and external ambient conditions for high levels of free cooling.

Dominic Phillips, CEO of Datum, commented; “As a data centre provider we have a responsibility to our clients to ensure that continuous capacity is available, which we do responsibly through our network of environmentally sustainable enterprise grade high security data centres. This expansion will help us to support our clients’ growth by providing enterprise grade colocation through our network of high security data centres.”

The design and build activities were carried out by Keysource, a global critical environment specialist and Datum’s infrastructure partner since Datum’s inception in 2013. Since designing and building Datum’s leading-edge Farnborough data centre facility, Keysource has been integral to all upgrade and development projects throughout Datum’s growth.

Datum Group will build two new data centre facilities over the next 12 months. Scheduled to come online early 2024, MCR2 at the Teledata site in Manchester will offer up to 25,000 ft2 of space, 4MVA of power and over 1,000 new server racks; while FRN2 in Farnborough will provide 600 footprints on the ground floor, with scope to double this capacity on the first floor.

Teledata was acquired by Datum Datacentres in September 2022 as part of its regional expansion strategy. Datum was acquired by Funds managed by the UBS Asset Management (UBS-AM) Real Estate & Private Markets business (REPM) in September 2021 with the intention to expand into key regional markets.
