About the job

Job summary

This role sits within the Data team, part of the DCMS Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) directorate.

Within the next 2 years, DCMS is implementing a new integrated business suite (ERP) for finance and HR services.  As a directorate we are continuing to find new ways to improve data and processes, optimising the use of existing systems and utilising additional tools where appropriate to drive innovation.

One of the key pillars of this work is the development of a Corporate Business Intelligence Platform. This platform is the key responsibility of the Business Intelligence team.  We are currently a small team with an ambitious remit to unlock the value of corporate data, putting it front and centre in the decision making process for departmental decision makers.

If you are a systems thinker, interested in developing digital skills and capability, and passionate about technology then this may be the role for you.

Job description

This role will report to the Business Intelligence Lead. You will be expected to work independently but also flexibly as part of a team.

To enhance data driven decision making you will assist in the build and implementation of products that transform the way we manage and interact with data, creating innovative solutions that ultimately provide an intuitive experience for a wide array of  users primarily within Finance, HR and Commercial.

These products will be held within the Corporate BI Platform, comprising two components: a data warehouse and reporting/dashboarding tools. The initial focus of the BI platform has been the core Finance and HR reporting and data processes, but we plan to expand the platform to bring in a range of other non-corporate data sources as well.

As the Junior Business Intelligence Developer your key responsibilities will be

  • Technically facilitate the expansion of the BI platform data warehouse, through developing data extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) pipelines.
  • Collaborate with teams across DCMS to assist the BI team in understanding reporting requirements.
  • Assist the BI team with the creation of self service, user intuitive reports within a business analytics reporting tool (currently Looker Studio).
  • Assist in the transition from a Google-based environment to Microsoft 365 by adapting and replicating existing processes to ensure seamless functionality within the new platform.

Person specification

The ideal candidate would have the following key skills and experience.

Essential requirements:

  • Demonstrable experience with data warehouses and dimensional data models (e.g., star/snowflake schemas)
  • Proficiency in SQL, including joins, subqueries, window functions, common table expressions (CTEs), and advanced SQL functions
  • Experience developing and deploying dashboards or reports used by business stakeholders, using tools such as Power BI or Looker Studio
  • Ability to gather and translate reporting requirements from stakeholders, and assist team leads in planning and implementing processes to support those requirements
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders

Desirable skills:

  • Working knowledge of data pipeline and data integration concepts related to data warehousing (e.g., ETL/ELT processes)
  • Experience with corporate data (notably Finance and HR)
  • Familiarity with automation tools such as Google Apps Script or Microsoft Power Automate

We are running an information session where prospective applicants can find out more about the role. This will be hosted by Glyn Spencer, and will take place on: Monday 21st July at 10 a.m.

The session will be an opportunity to hear more about the role, the team and wider directorate and the department. It will also be an opportunity for you to ask any questions.

Please register your interest by filling out this Registration form by Friday 18th July and you will be sent an invitation.

Please note that the session will not focus on the DCMS recruitment process - please direct any queries that you have on this topic (timelines, reasonable adjustments, onboarding etc) to recruitment.team@dcms.gov.uk
