Job summary

This role leads IT Service Management activities supporting Digital operations at MOD Chicksands, MOD Denison Barracks and MOD Garats Hay. The post-holder ensures effective communication with stakeholders across Defence Intelligence Digital and Academy stakeholders, maintaining situational awareness of IT service performance and representing DI Digital at relevant site meetings and forums. 

Managing a team of eight direct reports and overseeing three countersigning roles, the role involves line management, mentoring, and professional development to maintain a skilled and motivated workforce. The post-holder is responsible for monitoring and managing financial delegations, using management tools to track expenditure, identify deviations from forecasts, and implement cost control measures. Proactive engagement with finance and commercial stakeholders ensures future financial needs are planned and met. 

The role leads IT operations and technical projects, supporting engineers and maintaining clear communication with all stakeholders regarding progress, challenges, and financial aspects. It holds contractors and partners accountable for efficient service delivery and support. 

A key responsibility is the oversight of the Academy’s Information Technology used for training, ensuring it meets Defence’s security and infrastructure installation standards. The post-holder monitors infrastructure condition, facilities, and installations, reporting any deficiencies or risks to DI Digital Operations Wing Headquarters. They also manage Requests for Change (RFC), ensuring best practices in review and implementation, adequate resourcing, and timely reporting of Change Advisory Board outcomes. 

Maintaining accurate and comprehensive system installation and management documentation is essential to support current operations and future service recovery. The role is also accountable for all Digital team equipment issued via the Quatermaster's Department, implementing robust processes to minimise loss and support operational continuity. Overall, this position is critical to sustaining effective, secure, and financially responsible IT services within Defence Intelligence Digital operations. 

This role is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

This role has the following responsibilities: 

  •  Undertake line management, mentoring and countersigning tasks as required by the role. This role has 8 direct reports and 3 countersigning roles. Including 1 direct report based at Denison Barracks, Thatcham. 
  •  Undertake learning and development and upskilling as required.   
  •  Lead IT Service Management activities, providing support to Service Delivery staff and communicating effectively with both DI Digital and Defence Intelligence Academy stakeholders to help maintain situational awareness of IT Service performance at MOD Chicksands, MOD Garats Hay and Denison Barracks. Represent DI Digital at all relevant site meetings and forums. Expect to travel to MOD Garats Hay once per week to engage local stakeholders as DI Digital’s representative and Denison Barracks once per month. 
  • Monitor and manage financial delegation. Use appropriate management tools to monitor expenditure, highlighting deviations to expected spend forecast as early as possible. Implement measures to control or reduce expenditure where possible. Plan for future financial needs. Proactively engage with finance and commercial stakeholders.  
  • Lead IT technical projects, providing support to IT engineers and communicating effectively with all stakeholders regarding project progress, challenges, financial aspects and other pertinent project management related tasks. Hold technical contractors and partners to account for efficient service support/delivery.    
  • Ensure that all day-to-day activities in support of the Academy’s Training LANs are resourced adequately. This includes monitoring the condition of existing infrastructure, facilities, and installations against Defence Security Policy (JSP 440) and Defence ICT installation policy (JSP 453), highlighting deficiencies or risks to DI Digital Ops Wg HQ.  
  • Monitor and oversee requests for change (RFC). Ensure good practice is applied to reviewing and actioning RFCs. Ensure all changes are properly resourced and supported by DI Digital and the Academy HQ. Report outcome of Change Advisory Boards (CAB) to all relevant stakeholders.  
  • Provide and maintain accurate and comprehensive system installation and management documentation to aid current and future installations and service recovery.  
  • Accountable for all equipment issued to the Digital team from the Quartermasters Department via MJDI. Ensure robust process and procedures are implemented and sustained to ensure that likelihood of equipment loss is minimised.

Person specification

We are seeking an individual, with strong attention to detail, decision making and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly and concisely communicate both orally and in writing, with the confidence to champion change and table new ideas and creative solutions. 

It is desirable that applicants have working level competencies as an IT service manager or an IT infrastructure engineer. 

 Essential criteria:  

  • Prioritisation and decision-making skills.  
  • Willing to attend relevant training courses.  
  • Good understanding of information communications technology systems, their dependencies and their management.   
  • Line management experience. 
  • IT Service Operations experience 

Desirable criteria: 

  • Experience of managing a budget. 
  • IT service operations Infrastructure Engineer experience.
