Home Office Digital designs, builds and develops services for the rest of the department and for government. Every year our systems support up to 3 million visa applications, checks on 100 million border crossings, up to 8 million passport applications and deliver 140 million police checks on people, vehicles and property.
As an Infrastructure Engineer within the Public Cloud Team, you will play a key role in delivering and supporting secure, scalable cloud services across Azure and AWS. A primary focus of the role is identity and access management, account and subscription vending, and the automation of cloud onboarding processes through Infrastructure as Code. You will work closely with architects, security teams and delivery teams to develop cloud platform capabilities, improve governance and operational efficiency, and provide reusable solutions that enable teams to consume cloud services securely and at scale.
This is an opportunity to shape and scale the Home Office's public cloud capabilities. You will work with modern Azure and AWS technologies, drive automation, and play a key role in identity management and account/subscription vending at enterprise scale. The role offers exposure to complex technical challenges, collaboration with skilled specialists, and the chance to directly influence how secure cloud services are delivered across government.
Job description
An Infrastructure Engineer supports and maintains infrastructure solutions and services as directed and according to departmental policy and Home Office strategy.
You will work in a team of Infrastructure Engineers making sure services are delivered and supported as required. You work with and support third parties to provide infrastructure services and with technical architects to translate architectural designs into operations.
Like many organisations we need to maintain our services 24/7, therefore, on occasions there may be a requirement to work out of hours, for which you will be paid an additional allowance.
Key responsibilities
- building, configuring, transitioning, administering and supporting infrastructure technologies and solutions such as: compute, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, cloud, commercial off the shelf (COTS) and open-source packages and solutions
- resolving technical problems, ensuring that technical solutions continue to meet business requirements taking accountability for actions taken and decisions made
- identifying the correct procedures and appropriate channels for resolution and monitor resolution activities and progress updates to users
- investigating faults in systems, processes and services, and advise on the implementation of appropriate solutions and preventative measures
- working collaboratively to ensure that a set of IT products, suppliers and vendors come together to deliver an IT service
- using logical designs created by technical architects and required standards, methods and tools (including prototyping tools where appropriate) to build infrastructure solutions
Working Pattern
Due to the business requirements of this role, it is only available on a full-time basis. However, compressed hours are available.
Travel
Occasional travel may be required to other work locations within the UK according to business needs and may include overnight stays. All related costs will be reimbursed in line with Home Office policy.
Person specification
Essential Criteria
You’ll have a demonstrable passion for Infrastructure Engineering, with the following skills or some experience in:
- core technical concepts related to your role and ability to build solutions
- maintaining focus on the whole life cycle of service delivery; from design, development, and delivery through to operation
- dissecting a problem into its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes, allowing problem resolution
- presenting verbal and written information clearly and accurately in language which meets the needs of the user and can adapt to stakeholders' reactions with flexibility
- building strong partnerships with diverse teams across multiple locations and technologies
