Location

You can be based at any of the above locations, however if your chosen location is Yeading/Uxbridge please note:
This role is advertised as being based in Uxbridge; however, the contractual base will be Yeading.
While estate works are being carried out at the Yeading site, all roles will be temporarily located in Uxbridge. Successful applicants will therefore begin their employment at the Uxbridge location.
Please be aware that all employees will be required to work from the Yeading site once it reopens in 2028.
Employees based at Uxbridge will receive a London Weighting allowance of £4,000. This allowance will continue when the location moves to Yeading.

Job summary

DVSA plays a crucial role in maintaining safety standards on the roads, conducting tests, and overseeing vehicle-related matters in the UK.    

Our Digital Workspace team designs, builds and supports the devices, software and digital services that help DVSA colleagues work effectively wherever they are. We are focused on delivering a modern, secure and reliable digital experience, using automation, cloud management and user insight to continually improve our services. The team works across Microsoft and Apple platforms, using technologies such as Microsoft 365, Copilot, Intune, Autopilot, Defender for Endpoint, Apple Automated Device Enrolment, Digital Employee Experience tools, enterprise browsers and Netskope network security.

Job description

Working within the Infrastructure team as a Senior Engineer, you will play a crucial role in supporting, monitoring, and maintaining the organisation's cloud and digital infrastructure. You will be responsible for delivering or assisting with the delivery of programs and projects, providing support, guidance, and/or delivery when core infrastructure services are impacted or consumed. 

You will be instrumental in driving improvements to deliver new and updated core infrastructure services, based on clear evidence and according to business and user needs, to ensure maximum value is achieved from services. You will identify and implement functional, performance, and quality improvements to the core infrastructure estate. You will proactively monitor to identify issues or opportunities in core infrastructure services and have the ability to design, plan, implement, and release necessary changes according to the needs of the business. You will provide support to end users and IT teams to ensure appropriate use of the core infrastructure. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Drive improvements to deliver new and updated core infrastructure services, according to business and user needs, based on clear evidence, to ensure maximum value is achieved from services
  • Drive automation throughout the core infrastructure estate, adopting modern approaches, such as, Infrastructure as Code, where relevant
  • Maintenance of core infrastructure services through:
    • Identifying problems through analysis and proactively supporting resolution including documenting causes and remedies.
    • Identifying and implementing functional, performance and quality improvements to the core infrastructure estate

Person specification

You may hold or be willing to work towards the following qualifications: ITIL Foundation.

Required experience:

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

  • Engage and communicate with colleagues of all levels, with the ability to present technical ideas and concepts in the language of the business and its users.
  • Highly developed problem solving and analytical skills, with the ability to translate user and business needs into practical, appropriate technical solutions.

Government Digital and Data Allowance

The role is part of the Government Digital and Data (or Government Security Profession Career Framework) profession and utilises an enhanced Capability–Based Pay Framework which provides access to a Digital and Data allowance. 

The base pay is £44,241. In addition to this the role includes a Digital and Data allowance of up to £14,756. 

The value of allowance awarded will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated through the selection process. Here are more details on the pay framework. 

Additional Information

Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements

Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week.

Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 30 hours per week. 

Occasional travel to other offices will be required, which may involve overnight stays. 

This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements. 

The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (one of the locations cited in the advert) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.
