Why this role?
As an Applications Operations Engineer (Clone Tester), you’ll help assure that large‑scale batch services are operationally ready before they reach live production. Your work directly supports over 100 national infrastructure services that millions of people rely on every day.
About the team
You’ll join the Batch Operations team within HMRC’s Chief Engineering Platform Office (CEPO), working as part of Contact Engagement Platforms (CEP).
The team:
- Schedules, runs and supports batch services
- Operates across Tivoli Workload Scheduler (TWS) and Modern Virtual Environments (MVE)
- Works closely with delivery partners and operations teams to ensure smooth transitions into live
You’ll be part of an established, collaborative operational team focused on service stability and quality.
What you’ll be doing
In this role, you’ll carry out operational testing activities to support projects and services moving toward live production. This includes:
- Executing batch test suites on TWS and MVE platforms
- Performing database restores and installing code releases
- Analysing test results and logging defects / incidents
- Supporting clone activity to ensure environments mirror live systems
- Managing access to virtual test environments (including for third‑party suppliers)
- Working closely with Capgemini’s Maestro support team, configuration management and event management teams
- Producing operational test plans and test reports with accurate timings and results
- Updating and maintaining project and team documentation
- Collecting testing metrics and maintaining system reference files
- Attending project and implementation meetings where required
You’ll report into the Batch Operational Lead and work closely with wider support and delivery teams.

Essential experience & skills
You’ll need experience or working knowledge of:
- UNIX and Linux / MVE operating systems
- SQL (database queries)
- Large batch systems and operational support
- Tools such as Tivoli Workload Scheduler (TWS)
- Incident, defect and escalation management
- ITIL practices and Continual Service Improvement
- Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills
- Clear communication with internal and external partners
