At the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), our work shapes policies and services that make a real difference, from tackling homelessness and supporting vulnerable people, to strengthening local government and building sustainable communities.
We’re looking for three Senior Data Engineers to help build, operate and continuously improve critical data systems that inform decisions across government.
The roles
We’re recruiting for three Senior Data Engineer positions across two key teams:
Vulnerable People Statistics Team
You’ll support insight and analysis that informs policy for some of the most vulnerable people in society. A central part of this work is the Homelessness Case Level Information Collection (H‑CLIC), a national longitudinal dataset used to produce analysis, publications and dashboards that shape homelessness policy and decision‑making.
Consolidated Data Store (CDS) team
You’ll help develop and run the Consolidated Data Store (CDS), a business‑critical departmental platform that:
- Provides a consistent data architecture across many sources
- Enables secure, self‑service access to trusted data
- Supports analysts, economists and data professionals to deliver high‑quality insight

This is a hands‑on technical role with a strong service mindset, balancing support for live services with continuous improvement. Your work will directly enable better decisions across government.
What you’ll be doing
As a Senior Data Engineer, you will:
- Build, operate and improve automated data pipelines
- Support data ingestion, transformation, testing and publishing
- Improve the quality, reliability and performance of data services
- Proactively identify, diagnose and resolve data issues
- Maintain clear metadata and documentation so data can be easily found and reused
- Support secure and compliant data handling, including data protection and security controls
- Identify opportunities to improve tools, processes and ways of working
- Communicate complex data topics clearly to technical and non‑technical stakeholders
- Mentor and support colleagues, helping to build team capability and resilience
Who we’re looking for
We’re looking for experienced data engineers who can demonstrate:
- Experience delivering end‑to‑end data engineering solutions
- Strong coding and scripting skills, with Git for version control
- Solid understanding of data quality and how to prevent issues
- Experience handling data securely and proportionately
- Confidence supporting and operating live data services
- Clear communication skills across varied audiences
- Hands‑on experience using Python, R, SQL, Power BI and DAX
